Achy, Breaky Heart Voted One of the Worst Songs of the ’90’s
Okay. I'm willing to go out on a limb and bet that there were PLENTY of really lousy songs that were hot between 1990 and 2000. I think this list also reflects the fact that soooo many were just played and played and played. We in the radio bidness refer to that as "burn".
So, Rolling Stone has asked their readers to come up with a list that truly reflects the worst of the decade. First, don't shoot me, I'm just passing on the information.
Second, when you're in the middle of the storm, you don't know how bad it will be viewed years and years later. There are going to be songs on this list that you just might have enjoyed. That is, until you realized you were being beaten over the head with them.
As quoted from the Rolling Stone article:
Billy Ray Cyrus was just 20 years old when "Achy Breaky Heart" turned him into a country superstar. The song was a huge crossover hit that introduced line-dancing to people all across the globe. A hit like that should have forever destroyed Billy Ray's career, but he started acting in the early 2000s – and in 2005 his daughter Miley landed the role of Hannah Montana and Billy Ray was cast as her father. He's now a TV icon to teenagers all across the country, most of whom have probably never heard "Achy Breaky Heart."
And you know what else? The listening public is just insane most of the time. They'll turn someone into a super-star, then turn around and tear them down....only to build them up again. That's happened so often I really don't have the space to give specifics.
Country was changing back then. Some say for the better. And, after checking the other songs on the list, I'd have to agree that some were great tunes, but, that doggone "burn" factor sure had an effect.
And so, without further ado...here are the ten worst songs of the '90's as voted by the readers of Rolling Stone Magazine:
10. What's Up? - 4 Non Blondes
9. I'm Too Sexy - Right Said Fred
8. Who Let the Dogs Out? - Baha Men
7. My Heart Will Go On (Titanic Theme) - Celine Dion
6. MMMBop - Hanson
5. Tub Thumping - Chumbawamba
4. Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice
>>>>>3. Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus<<<<<
2. Los Del Rio - Macarena
1. Aqua - Barbie Girl
And there you have it. Rolling Stone's worst songs of the '90's. I'm pretty sure this list shouldn't be chiseled into stone. I would have like to see the same list compiled by the fans of CMT.
