The Aurora, Colo., Police Department said Tuesday morning that searchers discovered the body of a child who may be the one missing announced in an AMBER Alert on Monday.

The body was found in a pond in Olympic Park in Aurora, a city east of Denver.

"A pond behind me, just 2-300 yards away, we found the body of what appears to be a child inside the pond," Police Chief Nicholas Metz said during a press conference.

Aurora Police and The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children announced Monday that the AMBER Alert was issued for 6-year-old David Puckett.

"At this time, we are not able to give a positive identification," Metz said, adding he has told the family about the discovery.

"At this moment, we are treating this pond and the area around it as a crime scene," he said.

The area had been searched heavily since David went missing on Saturday. Searchers earlier walked around the pond, but did not enter it because it was covered with ice

The investigation will continue, Metz said.

Monday evening, police said they were regarding David's disappearance as a runaway. The AMBER Alert did not give any details about the circumstances about why he went missing.

The AMBER Alert described David as a white male with brown hair and hazel eyes. He is 4 feet tall and weighs 47 pounds. His date of birth is May 6, 2010. He was last seen wearing a tan jacket, black shirt, green camp pants and black boots with an orange stripe.

Each state sets its own criteria for defining AMBER (America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response, named for a Dallas girl who went missing in 1996 and was found murdered) Alerts, but they generally are issued if authorities believe a child under 17 has been abducted or is in imminent danger.
