Aubrey Vandiver is the MWC Player of the Year

The Mountain West Conference (MWC) announced its 2010-11 men's and women's basketball awards Monday. Six University of Wyoming athletes earned recognition with the highest honor going to Cowgirl senior Aubrey Vandiver who was chosen as the MWC Women's Player of the Year.

Vandiver was also the only unanimous first team selection. She averaged 19.6 points to lead the MWC in scoring while adding 8.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game in league play. The senior from Laramie, Wyo. recorded a league-leading six double-doubles in 16 MWC contests, including eight 20-point performances. This was Vandiver's first first-team selection after being named to the second team in 2009-10 and the third team in 2007-08.

Joining Vandiver on the First-Team All-MWC list is fellow senior Hillary Carlson from Cheyenne, Wyo. Carlson averaged 15.2 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in conference play while shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 83.1 percent from the free throw line. She led the Cowgirls in scoring four times.

Two other Cowgirls, senior Jade Kennedy and sophomore Chaundra Sewell, were recognized by the MWC by way of honorable mention.

On the men's side, two Wyoming Cowboys were listed as honorable mention. Sophomores Desmar Jackson and Amath M'baye were part of the nine player list.

The men's honors are chosen by the league's nine head coaches along with a select media panel. The women's honors are selected by the nine MWC head coaches. The full lists of awards announced today can be found below and on the Mountain West Conference website.
