A Bar Nunn man accused of kicking down a neighbor's door and beating an elderly couple has been found competent to stand trial.

William Quillin will appear for a preliminary hearing next week to determine if his case should be bound over for trial, Natrona County Circuit Court Judge Michael Patchen said during the brief competency hearing.

Assistant District Attorney Dan Itzen and Public Defender Rob Oldham said they agreed with the conclusion of the mental health evaluation of Quillin recently conducted at the Wyoming State Hospital in Evanston.

Quillin, who was 43 when arrested, is charged with one count of aggravated robbery and two counts of aggravated assault.

Meanwhile, his accomplice Sharon Marie Hinkle, pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental illness or deficiency last week during her arraignment in district court. She will be undergoing a mental health evaluation.

She faces one charge of conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary and one charge of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.

The case began Feb. 8, when Quillin and Hinkle allegedly kicked in their neighbor’s door on Bel Vista Drive in Bar Nunn and demanded that the neighbors turn over a safe.

The neighbors — a 71-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman — said they didn’t have a safe.

Quillin allegedly attacked them, and they were taken to Wyoming Medical Center.

Deputies found Quillin and Hinkle at Hinkle’s house nearby. A standoff ensued and the Special Response Team was called out.

Quillin and Hinkle gave themselves up shortly after 9 a.m. the next morning.

Quillin remains in custody on a $1.5 million bond.
