The end of the regular season didn’t go quite like both Wyoming basketball teams had hoped, as they both lost to Boise State last weekend.

The Mountain West regular season title was up for grabs last Friday night at the Arena-Auditorium. The Cowgirls hosted Boise State and lost 67-63.

UW had an eight point lead early in the fourth quarter. A late 9-0 run by the Broncos on three 3-pointers gave Boise State a 65-61 lead with two minutes left. Wyoming’s Taylor Rusk made a shot that cut it to 65-63. After two defensive stops, the Cowgirls had a chance, but Clara Tapia missed a shot late, and Boise State sealed it with two free throws.

Wyoming (20-9, 13-5) finished third in the MW. They were led by Marta Gomez with 19 points, while Natalie Baker and Liv Roberts added 13 and 12, respectively. UW shot only 38 percent from the field.

Boise State (20-9, 14-4) shared the conference crown with UNLV. The Broncos were led by freshman Braydey Hodgins with a game-high 24 points. They shot 45.6 percent from the field and held a 16 rebound advantage, 43-27, over the Cowgirls.

Wyoming will be the third seed at the MW Championship tournament this week in Las Vegas. The Cowgirls will play the winner of Monday’s first round game between No. 6 seed New Mexico and No. 11 seed San Jose State. UW’s game on Tuesday will start at 9:30 p.m., Mountain Time.

Wyoming Cowboys

A slow start cost the Cowboys at Boise State, as they lost to the Broncos 95-87 at Taco Bell Arena Saturday night.

Boise State opened the game with a 15-3 run in the first six minutes. The Cowboys cut it to eight midway through the first half on an Alexander Aka Gorski three, 15-23. That’s as close as UW got. The Broncos led 47-34 at half. Wyoming made surges to get within 10 and 11, but couldn’t get closer until late in the game.

Wyoming (19-12, 10-8) was led by Justin James with 22 points. Hayden Dalton added 22. The Pokes shot 53 percent from the field, but a 2-14 start was too much to overcome.

Boise State (23-7, 13-5) shot 50 percent for the game. They were led by Christian Sengfelder with 24 points. Lexus Williams added a career-best 22.

The Cowboys will be the sixth seed at the MW Championship tournament in Las Vegas. They will play No. 11 seed San Jose State in the first round Wednesday at 5 p.m., Mountain Time. The winner of that game moves on to face No. 3 seed New Mexico in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
