Cal Clips the Cowboys in Overtime, 78-72 [VIDEOS]
The Cowboys rallied from down 12 points and forced overtime, but Wyoming lost to the California Golden Bears 78-72 Saturday in Laramie.
Josh Adams gave the Pokes a 69-67 lead on a lay-up with 2:44 left in OT. Cal answered with eight straight points and took a commanding 75-69 edge. After a Justin James 3-pointer for UW, the Bears’ Jordan Matthews added three throws for the final margin.
Wyoming (5-3) was led by Adams’ 32 points and 4 assists. Jonathan Barnes had a career-high 10 points. James, Alan Herndon and Jason McManamen all added nine points. The Cowboys shot 43.6 percent from the field (24-55). They were 7-of-23 (30%) from deep and only 65 percent from the foul line (17-26).
California (6-2) was led by Tyrone Wallace with 23 points. Matthews scored 11 of his 14 in overtime. Ivan Rabb added 13 points. The Bears shot 44 percent from the floor, which included 42 percent from beyond the arc. They were only 14-for-25 (56%) at the charity stripe.
The Cowboys trailed 57-45 with 9:42 left. They responded by ending regulation on 17-5 run. Down 60-54, Trey Washington III hit a big three from the deep right corner. After two Cal free throws, Alan Herndon came back with a 3-point play. Wyoming tied it on an Adams bucket with 32 seconds left.
Wallace missed a jumper to win it with 5 seconds left. Washington III picked up the loose ball rebound, but his half-court heave fell short.
Wyoming is back in action Thursday with their first game in the Global Sports Classic versus Southern. The game will start at 7 p.m.
