A 29-year-old Cheyenne man is facing up to six years in prison after admitting to police that he beat his wife with a pole and choked her.

According to court documents, Cheyenne Police were called to John Mayer's house in the 800 block of W. 10th Street around 10:30 a.m. on February 4.

Mayer's wife told police that she got into a physical fight with her husband because he took several pills the night before stating he wanted to kill himself.

She said when she tried to call the cops, John took the phone away from her, pushed their son away, began hitting her in the head and body with a door stop pole and started strangling her after he knocked her to the floor.

When police asked Mayer if he was trying to kill his wife, he replied, "Yes, yes I was."

Mayer's wife was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center and was treated for her injuries.

Mayer has been charged with strangulation of a household member, domestic battery and interference with an emergency call. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 14 in Laramie County Circuit Court.
