Cheyenne Police Prepared for Active Shooter Threats [PHOTOS]

While no amount of planning can prevent tragedies like Sunday night’s Las Vegas shooting from happening, Cheyenne police say they’re as prepared as they can be for such events.

“We’re aware of the trend of active shooters and what’s going on at the national level,” said Officer Kevin Malatesta. “It’s something that we train and practice for.”

Malatesta says the department has been regularly conducting active shooter training since the early 2000’s. In fact, it just so happens that officers are currently going through the training.

“Each quarter we have a mandatory advanced officer training,” said Malatesta. “It’s something that every sworn officer participates in.”

“We really do try to anticipate what could happen, predict what may take place,” Malatesta added. “A lot of what we do, just by nature, is reactive and so we want to make sure we have the best response possible.”

Malatesta says while Cheyenne is a “pretty safe community,” the city is not immune to mass shootings like the one in Las Vegas.

“It could happen anywhere, anytime,” said Malatesta. “We want to be ready for it and have our response so that we can simply go without having to figure out what we’re going to do.”
