The Wyoming Cowboys wrestling team continued on its recent hot streak with a pair of dual wins last weekend.

In both matches, Wyoming (7-2, 1-1) won seven of the ten match-ups and ran its winning streak to six consecutive dual victories.

Friday night in Laramie, the Pokes dominated CSU Bakersfield 28-9 at the UniWyo Sports Complex. Branson Ashworth (165) and Kyle Pope (174) won the first two matches by tech fall, as UW jumped out 10-0. Drake Foster (125) and Sam Turner (149) also recorded bonus-point wins in the dual.

Head coach Mark Branch said in a statement from the University of Wyoming,

“I was expecting it to be a little bit of a dogfight. Overall, I was pleased with the bonus-points, especially early.”

It was back on the road Sunday night in Corvallis, OR, as the Cowboys took on Oregon State. Wyoming lost the first three matches, but rallied to win the final seven and beat the Beavers, 29-12.

Redshirt freshman Montorie Bridges, ranked No. 7 at 133, came through with a major decision, 19-6 that got UW on the scoreboard. Top-ranked Bryce Meredith (141) and Sam Turner (149) followed with major decisions. The Pokes took the lead when senior and No. 10-ranked Archie Colgan won at 157 pounds in a 3-1 decision. That made it 15-12 Wyoming. Ashworth (165), Pope (174) and Chaz Polson (184) finished off the dual victory.

Branch said after the win at Oregon State, “You always take a chance when you draw and find out which weight you’re starting at, but after the deficit we were in, we came out and wrestled well. You hate to see bonus-points go the other way, but Montorie (Bridges) did a great job of getting us back on the right track. I wasn’t expecting to win seven in a row, but it was a great performance.”

The Cowboys return to the mat Thursday with a Big 12 conference match at No. 15 South Dakota State.
