Cowboys Hold Off Mavericks, 76-75 [VIDEOS]
Josh Adams made two free throws with 3.5 seconds left, and the Wyoming Cowboys held on for a 76-75 victory over the Omaha Mavericks Saturday in Laramie.
They were pivotal, as Omaha’s Devin Patterson made a 3-pointer at the final buzzer.
Wyoming (7-4) utilized a 17-4 run midway through the second half to take the lead for good and win their second game of the Global Sports Classic.
The Cowboys trailed 46-39 when Adams nailed a pair of three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. A three-point play by Alexander Aka Gorski put UW ahead 48-46.
It was 67-64 Wyoming when Trey Washington III hit a big three as the shot clock expired with 1:14 left. After the Mavericks got back within 70-67, Justin James short jumper in the paint with 21 seconds left pushed it to two possessions. Jason McManamen and Adams each hit a pair of free throws in the last 11 seconds that preserved the win.
UW shot 9-of-10 at the line in the final five minutes.
Adams finished with 31 points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Alan Herndon added 14 points and 7 rebounds. McManamen had 11 points and 8 boards, while James came up with 11 points and 6 rebounds.
Wyoming shot 47 percent from the field. They were 22-of-26 at the foul line for 84.6 percent.
Omaha was led by Tre’Shawn Thurman with 20 points, while Jake White added 17 points and 13 rebounds. The Mavericks shot only 39 percent from the floor and went 23-of-34, 68 percent, at the line.
The Cowboys had an 11-3 run early, but it was answered with an 11-2 run by Omaha. Wyoming held a 29-26 lead at half.
The Global Sports Classic continues Monday and Tuesday for the Cowboys with their next two games in Las Vegas. Next up is the Marshall Thundering Herd Monday night at 8:30 p.m.
