Cowboys Rally to Win at Montana, 73-72
A pair of free throws from Justin James and a blocked shot by Alan Herndon gave Wyoming a 73-72 road win at Montana Monday night.
James knocked in a pair from the line with 30 seconds left. After one free throw for the Grizz, Wyoming turned it over. Montana had one last shot to win it, but Herndon blocked Walter Wright’s shot that ended the game.
Head coach Allen Edwards said after the victory in a University of Wyoming release,
“I think this was a tremendous road win for this basketball team. The last stance is something you try to create in practice and when we came into that timeout we talked about what we have practiced and executed well.”
Wyoming (2-0) was led by Jason McManamen. He scored a game-high 20 points. With a pair of 3-pointers, he moved into the top-10 in career three’s at UW. James scored a career-high 19 points off the bench, while Hayden Dalton added 11 points and career-best 13 rebounds for his first double-double. Herndon chipped in ten points.
The Pokes shot 40 percent from the floor and 32 percent from beyond the arc. They made nine 3-pointers and went 22-27 at the line.
Montana (0-2) was led by Sayeed Pridgett with 20 points. The Grizz shot 49 percent, but made only four three’s.
Wyoming jumped out to leads of 11-4 and then 16-8 early. An 8-0 run by Montana tied it. The Cowboys closed the first half on a 14-5 run for a 41-35 halftime lead. The Pokes made only two field goals in the first ten minutes of the second half. UW trailed 56-47 before they rallied for victory.
The Cowboys return home for their next game. They host South Dakota State Saturday at 7 p.m.
