Cowgirls Fall To South Dakota 2-1 In Overtime

(GOWYO.COM) The University of Wyoming women's soccer team suffered a disappointing 2-1 overtime loss to South Dakota in the Cowgirls' home opener on Friday afternoon. Senior forward Lucie McDowell scored the lone goal for Wyoming (1-1-1) in the 84th minute to send the game to overtime, but the Coyotes (1-1-1) clinched the game winner in the 98th minute.

"Any loss is disappointing, especially the home opener," Wyoming head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "I thought there were some breakaways we could have finished on in the second period. We just need to come out more confident and take advantage of our chances."

The game was scoreless until the 70th minute of play. South Dakota's Makena Cameron scored her first goal of the season as she was able to find the back of the net from 12 yards out. The Coyotes held that advantage until the 84th minute when Wyoming tied the game as junior forward Sara Paul delivered the ball to senior forward Lucie McDowellat the top of the box to score her second goal of the season.

Eight minutes into overtime, the Coyotes' freshman forward Jamie Karch took a shot that tucked just under junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm to give South Dakota the win. Karch finished the game with two shots to go along with one assist.

Overall, the Cowgirls attempted 14 shots, eight of which were on goal. South Dakota was held to eight shots with six on goal. Last week against TCU, the Cowgirls were able to limit the Horned Frogs to 12 shots and 16 against Montana. Wyoming also took the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2.

Paul led the Cowgirls with four shots on the day, as senior midfielder Liz O'Reilly and sophomore midfielder Mollee Ramsay each recorded two. Juniors Kasey Curtis and Kristin Howard, sophomore Jennifer Paul and freshmenMandy Meyer and Brooklyn Chambers each added one shot apiece for the Cowgirls.

The first period of play was pretty evenly played by both teams. South Dakota held the Cowgirls to four shots, one of which was on goal. The Coyotes were limited to only one shot in the first period. Wyoming recorded two corner kicks, as South Dakota only took one.

The second period was filled with plenty of chances for both teams. Wyoming totaled seven shots on goal compared to South Dakota's four. South Dakota's goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor made four of her five saves in the second period. Boehm recorded four on the day, three in the second period.

UW will travel next to Drake on Sept. 6 for a 4 p.m. kickoff in Des Moines, Iowa and then head to Nebraska-Omaha on Sept. 8 before returning home for a matchup with Weber State on Sept. 13.
