I don’t hate a lot of things, but mosquitoes I absolutely despise. Although for some reason they love me or at least my blood. Anytime I am at the lake or a backyard party, those flying hypodermic needles will find me first before anyone else. Summertime means I travel with bottle of deet in one hand and hydrocortisone in the other. What really can you do to prevent these summer time vampires from biting you? And what do we need to be worried about?

When it comes to the Zika virus, the Cowboy State has even less to worry about. In a recent article from Wyoming Medical Center’s Summer Safety Series, they wrote about the Zika virus. The fact of the matter is the type of mosquito that carries the virus is not in Wyoming. The likelihood of getting Zika in the Cowboy State is rare or nil. It is possible to get the virus in a tropical region and then return to Wyoming, but native cases are just not possible.

Avoid peak buggy hours at Dawn & Dusk. Dress in long clothing to cover your skin. IF you have problems with mosquitoes on your property, drain areas that contain still water. Since mosquitoes breed in small amounts of still water, this will prevent the little monsters from even being born.
The Wyoming Department of Health recommends using bug spray that contains Deet. It is effective, but some people have reported adverse reactions.
