Do you know your Wyoming wildlife POOP? That's right, we're talking animal droppings identification.

The general term for non-human crappings is scat, and the study of it, scatology. Some may wonder why anyone would want to know about it, much less study it, but there is very good use for knowing your s-c-a-t.

If you want to know what has been slowly devouring your garden, that's when you do some of your own scatological studies. The insult to injury is in just how a critter sees your garden as, "Perfect ... for me to poop on."

Of course, there are places an animal is just marking it's territory, but it may have also occurred that when you're out in the wild, if you see fresh scat on the trail, it could be helpful to know what animal may still be around.

When getting passed the whole yucky part of poop, there is a lot more to learn from all the clues scat reveals. As one website says, every piece of scat has a special story.

As for colors, only the advanced in scatology can read an exact animal, but if definitively white, instead of dark, it is from a wild animal, because calcium from bone fragments bleach, unlike the results of just commercial dog food.

You can find loads more on scat online, in descriptions, photos and tons of videos that help you tell the signs of a mountain lion from a bear, or a deer from a rabbit.

One more thing to know if you see scat is that it may be toxic. Don't pick it up with your bare hands. Not that you'd ever even think of doing that.
