Students who missed class last week after Albany County schools were closed due to the power outage will have to make up that day at the end of this month.

The state requires 175 days of student contact and does not budget for snow days.

According to Mike Hamel, assistant superintendent for human resources and quality learning at Albany County School District No. 1, up until last year when a bird flew into a transformer and caused another power outage that resulted in school closures, it had been 12-15 years since Laramie utilized a snow day.

"So I think at some point during that time span, the calendar committee just quit building them in," says Hamel.

The make-up day set for May 31 will only require students to attend for half a day.
