Open casting calls for ‘American Idol‘ have brought out lots of memorable singers, good and bad. But they’ve also spawned a chance for the next generation to get discovered, including some young women who are seeking their own versions of the fame they’ve seen their fathers achieve. Here’s a look back at five ‘Idol’ hopefuls who’ve tried to make their famous dads proud.

Jane Carrey

Earlier this week on the Idol’ auditions show from San Diego, 24-year-old Jane Carrey, daughter of actor Jim, showed off her pipes with a rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s ‘Something to Talk About.’ “The last name definitely helps and hurts,” she said. Carrey impressed judges enough to get a ticket to Hollywood. See her performance below.

Jordin Sparks

“What you want as a dad is for your kids to outdo you, and that’s what happened,” said former New York Giants’ cornerback Phillippi Sparks in 2007 of his daughter, Jordin. She won Idol’s’ sixth season at age 17, the youngest ever to take home the top prize. Plus, her debut album went platinum, and she earned a Grammy nomination in 2009. Watch Sparks’ ‘Idol’ audition below.

Ayla Brown

Daughter of Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA), Ayla became a household name of her own during the show’s 5th season when she finished in the top 16. Despite a stellar start to her career, Ayla hasn’t achieved the level of fame she had hoped for, and relaunched her stalling career as a country music artist. (Her dad also earned press for his past modeling career.) She’s now a contributor to the CBS ‘Early Show’ and has partnered with the Philadelphia 76ers. See Ayla sing ‘Reflection’ during Season 5 below.

Shannon Magrane

15-year-old Shannon Magrane tried out last Wednesday in Savannah and brought the whole family along for her performance. Shannon is the daughter of Joe Magrane, a St. Louis Cardinals’ pitcher who played in the Majors from 1987 to 1996. Her performance of ‘Something’s Got a Hold on Me’ got her a nod to the next round, but it was judge Steven Tyler’s provocative comments that had people talking.

Lara Johnston

Lara Johnston, daughter of Doobie Brothers lead singer Tom Johnston, had already become well-known at age 17 when she finished fifth in ‘Rock the Cradle,’ an MTV reality show featuring young musicians with famous parents that aired in 2008. She made it through to Hollywood, but didn’t make it any further. Was her short appearance on’Idol’ enough to launch her career? Time will tell. (Watch her San Francisco audition below.)
