George Strait has literally hundreds of songs in his vast catalog, but in honor of his 60th birthday today (May 18), we’re asking you the impossible: What is your favorite George Strait song? Trust us, we know — the possibilities are endless. Yet somehow, we’ve narrowed it down to just five choices.

Pick between classics like ‘All My Ex’s Live in Texas’ and ‘Check Yes or No,’ or learn towards a more modern version of the King of Country. We’ve also included 2008′s ‘I Saw God Today,’ his hit ‘Troubadour’ and even the 2011 release ‘Here for a Good Time,’ so you have some options. But there are many, many, many more George Strait songs out there.

Don’t like our poll choices? Tell us which songs you would have added to the list in the comments section below. Happy voting, and Happy Birthday George!

Startlingly efficient. Yet, at the same time, we were sort of hoping for more of a mess.

If you feel the need to try this at home, you probably should wear safety goggles — and steel-plated pants, if you can find them. And you probably shouldn’t try it if you’ve already indulged in other bottles of beer.

In fact, DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME. We’re sorry we even brought it up. Here, watch a video about opening a wine bottle with your shoe. That you can try at home. (And don’t ever let anyone tell you we aren’t classy.)

It’s been nearly a year since Trace Adkins‘ Brentwood, Tenn., home was destroyed by an electrical fire. And even though the tragedy lies many months behind Adkins, his wife Rhonda, and their five daughters, the patriotic country singer still vividly remembers the day he and his family lost everything.

Of course ‘everything’ only applies to the Adkins family’s material possessions. The ‘Just Fishin” singer is quick to point out in a recent interview with the Tennesseean that he’s never been a material guy, and losing his entire home in a fire affirmed that.

“It wasn’t as traumatic as it could have been,” Adkins says. “And I think the best thing that came out of the whole thing for me, and it’s an affirmation of something that I already suspected, that I wasn’t that much of a material guy. I’m not a slave to material things. I always kind of thought that, but after that I knew it. I’m not.”

The day the the home caught fire, two of Adkins daughters youngest were inside the home with their nanny. Luckily, the nanny acted quickly to pull the girls from the burning house, and a kind neighbor helped save their animals. When Rhonda Adkins returned home from her errands, it was obvious the house was going to burn to the ground.

The country star was en route to Alaska when his home engulfed in flames. By the time his seven-hour flight landed and he turned his phone on, his wife and family had informed him via text and voice messages that everything was already gone. Not one to get his feathers ruffled about much, Adkins canceled his fishing trip and scheduled performances in Alaska and returned home right away.

Just one week after the blaze, Adkins was interviewed about the incident by a radio station. “I was going to shave a couple of days ago, and I don’t even have a razor; there’s something that always comes up,” he said. “I got two hats left, a pair of boots, I got a guitar, truck and a great job, and my family is healthy, so I am good.”

In the 11 months since the fire took place, Adkins and his family have moved into a rental home and they have finalized the blueprints for their next house. The singer — who just turned 50 and hasn’t slowed down a bit — has been working like a mad man.

Currently, he’s in the midst of his intimate Songs and Stories theater tour, which will take him all over the U.S. During stops in a few select cities, he’ll be taping his new GAC TV series ‘Great American Hero.’ The series will highlight organizations and individuals who are making small towns a better place to live.

“You can’t help but be moved by the things these people are doing. Everybody ends up crying,” he says, in reference to the series. “You get older and you mature a little bit and you start slowing down and you pay a little more attention to what’s going on around you, and maybe you just want to savor all the good that you can find, especially in this world today. Everything seems to be so crazy; we need a little bit of kindness to alleviate some of it.”

Despite a major tragedy, it seems like Trace Adkins is doing just fine.

By now, everyone knows that award-winning country star Taylor Swift has a huge heart. And thanks to her award-winning, record-breaking music career, the ‘Mean’ hitmaker has a hefty bank account, too. What do you get when you put those things together? A gigantic donation to a new education center at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

In fact, the six-time Grammy award winner’s donation of $4 million is the largest gift by a musician in Country Music Hall of Fame history, and now, the new education center will officially be known as the Taylor Swift Education Center. The exhibit and classroom space is scheduled to open in 2014. Not a bad legacy for the young country star, who will likely be just 24 or 25 when the center opens.

“In terms of what it will allow us to do, we do education very well now,” museum director Kyle Young told the Associated Press (via Billboard). “It will allow us to do what we do better, serve more people, develop new programs, and I’m happy to say that as we talked through this opportunity with Taylor, she very much wants to be involved in an advisory capacity in what we do. Is there a better person out there who’s in touch with a young audience? I think not. I was joking we should be paying her to do that. I was only joking.”

Country music’s sweetheart has a storied relationship with the Hall of Fame. She signed her record contract there and gave one of her first public performances on the building’s plaza. In the past, she has donated her talents to the All for the Hall fundraiser benefits and loaned the museum her dresses, stage costumes and instruments for display.

Since May 2010, a free-standing Taylor Swift multimedia exhibit has been one of the museum’s most popular attractions.

In addition to her generosity to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Swift has made the news a number of times in recent years thanks to her kind heart in general. Earlier this year, she invited two-time cancer patient Kevin McGuire to be her date at the ACMs after the 18-year-old invited Ms. Swift to his prom. Just this month, she made headlines for ensuring sure that a 13-year-old fan who missed Swift’s stop in Sacramento (due to a tragic drunk driving accident) would have tickets for her next show in the city and even sent her a goodie bag to tide her over.

Who knows? Maybe the next Taylor Swift will find his or her start in the forthcoming Taylor Swift Education Center. After all, that’s the goal for creating the education program.

Chalk up another holiday to the category of “bizarre.” International Migratory Bird Day, observed in the United States on the second Saturday of May, will be in Laramie this Saturday (the second Saturday of the month).

Ok – maybe bizarre isn’t the right word, but uncommon seems fair at the very least.

According to birdday.org, International Migratory Bird Day (or IMDB- not to be confused with the movie website) celebrates and brings attention to one of the most important and spectacular events in the Americas – bird migration.

The holiday will be celebrated Saturday morning in Laramie’s Optimist Park with bird walks on the Greenbelt at 8 AM and 10 10AM. Booths & activities will also be setup in the park from 9 AM until 1 PM. On hand will be live raptors and the activities list includes the chance to experience the hazards of migration, test your own wingspan and learn about some of the best places to see birds.

The group behind birdday.org, Environment For the Americas, says the holiday is worthy of celebration because “Public awareness and concern are crucial components of migratory bird conservation.” Citizens who are enthusiastic about birds, informed about threats, and empowered to become involved in addressing those threats, can make a tremendous contribution to maintaining healthy bird populations. By modeling what can be done and involving people, their interest and involvement in stewardship can grow.

One of the most successful vehicles for public education on migratory birds is International Migratory Bird Day.”

International Migratory Bird Day was created in 1993, and today, nearly 500 events are held yearly from South America to Canada.

Donna Summer died on Thursday, and though she may be best known as the Queen of Disco, the ‘Last Summer’ singer’s passing and an outpouring of support from country music artists proves the influence of an icon can transcend any genre.

“So sad to hear of Donna Summer passing,” Sara Evans tweeted Thursday after learning of her sudden death. “I absolutely love her music! Had her albums as a child and memorized them! She’ll be missed!” Billy Ray Cyrus also took to his official Twitter page to mourn Summer’s passing. “RIP #Donna Summer LEGEND !!! Your music will live forever,” tweeted the singer.

Even in the wake of what most would consider a tragic loss, Jimmy Wayne chose to keep things positive, focusing on the contributions Summers made in the music world. “Did you know that #DonnaSummer was the producer & conductor on ‘We are the World,’” Wayne posted, referring to the massively successful charity single.

Born LaDonna Gaines in Boston in 1948, Summer first charted with ‘Sally Go ‘Round the Roses’ in 1971 under the name Donna Gaines. The singer soon changed her stage name and overhauled her sound before scoring a No. 2 single on the Hot 100 chart in 1975 with the overtly sexual, ‘Love to Love You Baby.’ Summer earned an additional 13 Top 10 singles spanning 14 years, including the No. 1 hits ‘MacArthur Park,’ ‘Hot Stuff,’ ‘Bad Girls’ and ‘No More Tears (Enough is Enough),’ a duet with Barbra Streisand.

Summer also had connections to country music — at least as a songwriter. The one-time Nashville resident penned the song ‘Starting Over Again’ with her husband, and the track later became a chart-topped for both Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. According to the Boot, Summer was even a Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum board member.

A statement issued on behalf of her family reads, ”Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith. While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy.”

“Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time,” writes her family.

Donna Summer died at the age of 63 after a battle with lung and breast cancer. She is survived by her husband Bruce Sudano, their daughters Brooklyn and Amanda, as well as her daughter Mimi from her previous marriage.

A lot of people that live in Laramie enjoy the outdoors, and particularly all the activities you can do outside that are in and around the Gem City. One popular way to exercise or simply just get out and about is bicycling.

Whether competitive or not, our community has numerous cyclists who delight in being able to go for a casual ride, train for specific events or utilize their bike to get them wherever needed. In fact, Wyoming is rated 17th in the National Bicycle Friendly State Rankings. Did you know there’s actually a national “Bike to Work Month” and a national “Bike to Work Week?” Hey, there’s even a national “Bike to Work Day,” which just happens to be today. Laramie also has its own cycling organization, Cycle Wyoming, where you can find plenty of information on various cycling events and clubs. So if you do own a bicycle, it got us thinking about how you use it. Gem City, we want to know…

Kenny Chesney is gearing up to head back out on the road on his first major stadium run since last summer’s Goin’ Coastal Tour. Not only is he sharing the stage with his fellow country music superstar Tim McGraw, but also famed Nashville musician Kenny Greenberg.

Greenberg is the Academy of Country Music’s 2012 Guitarist of the Year and a veteran session musician in Music City who has previously collaborated with Bob Seger, Willie Nelson and Etta James. The legendary guitarist has frequently worked with Chesney on past musical projects, including the singer’s forthcoming new album ‘Welcome to the Fishbowl’ (in stores June 19) and his previous album, ‘Hemingway’s Whiskey.’

“Kenny is one of the best guitarists out there today, period,” Chesney says of his fellow Kenny, Greenberg. “He’s been a great friend and collaborator over the years, right through ‘Welcome to the Fishbowl,’ and it’s going to be amazing to have him at the party each night this summer.”

Greenberg will join Chesney’s already solid band of musicians, which includes Wyatt Beard (keyboards), Sean Paddock (drums), Steve Marshall (bass), Clayton Mitchell (guitar), Jim Bob Gairrett (steel guitar) and Jon Conley (guitar/fiddle).

The highly-anticipated Brothers of the Sun Tour, also featuring Jake Owen and Grace Potter, is set to kick off on June 2 in Tampa, Fla.

Like we told you earlier this year, rising country trio Gloriana will perform their latest hit, ‘(Kissed You) Good Night’ on the May 21 episode of the hit reality show, ‘The Bachelorette.’ The band is set to serenade the newest Bachelorette Emily Maynard and her love-driven hopefuls during a unique one-on-one date segment.

The trio’s latest television appearance seems a natural fit, considering member Rachel Reinert’s fondness for the popular television show. “I’m a huge fan of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette,” gushes the band’s only female member (quote via Warner Music). “I watched Emily when she was a contestant on the Bachelor and I was an instant fan of hers, so hearing that she is a fan of our band was a wonderful surprise! I’m excited to watch the new season, and I’m even more excited that we got to be a part of it.”

‘(Kissed You) Good Night’ is on the verge of becoming the band’s highest charting single, as it’s currently sitting at No. 17 on the country songs chart. Their debut single, ‘Wild at Heart,’ reached No. 15 in 2009, selling more than 500,000 digital copies. The band’s current radio offering is the second single from Gloriana’s yet-to-be-released ‘A Thousand Miles Left Behind’ and is the band’s first radio single since member Cheyenne Kimball’s departure in 2011.

A women in Superior, WI not only offered to sell off her ex-husband and his junk, but she also tagged a GMC Yukon with lots of bright graffiti and bad words. There’s also a flat tire on the vehicle. Warning: the photos are NSFW.

Not since Linda Barrett got revenge on Mike Damone and his (what-looked-like-a-Gremlin) car in ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ for impregnating her BFF Stacy by spraypainting “prick” on the door have we had such a hearty laugh at a scorned woman expressing her rage and wrath on a vehicle. You’ve never…go watch it right now. We’ll wait.

Local radio station MIX108 and its quick snapping photog captured the images, including ones of the cops arriving on the scene around 4PM to inspect the debris. There was also a pile of ash on site, which would indicate that the angry woman set her ex’s things on fire and that which she didn’t burn, she left strewn in a heap.

The truck was removed about an hour later, but his stuff remained on the lawn. Everyone has to air their dirty laundry once in a while and express their rage, but this mess makes the property values plummet!

Nope, we can’t stop humming that Carrie Underwood song either.

Jamie Moyer extended his record for being the oldest winning pitcher in history to 49 years and 180 days, as the Colorado Rockies (15-21) beat the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks (16-22) 6-1 last night in Denver.

Moyer, already on his way to 6 1/3 innings of pitching that baffled D-backs hitters, hit a dribbler to the right side of the infield with runners at second and third with two out in the fourth that scored two runs. Moyer struck out five against two walks and six hits, and didn’t give up a run until allowing consecutive doubles in the seventh.

Official: Tuesday’s Box Score.

The Rockies riddled Corbin (2-2), a 22-year-old rookie, for six runs and nine hits in six innings. The game was smoother than Tuesday’s 5-4 victory at San Francisco. The Rockies blew a 4-1 lead in that one but won on Marco Scutaro’s ninth-inning home run.

“It’s just a well-played game, a clean game without unnecessary drama and flair,” manager Jim Tracy said.

Field events at the Hershey Track Meet include the standing long jump and soft ball throw. In addition to field events, the meet will feature races ranging from 50 yards to 1600 yards. There is also a 4X100 meter relay available for the 13-14 age group which would require a group of four participants to sign up for that event together. All race distances are not available for every age group. However, both field events are open to all age groups. Contestants can compete in up to three events with at least one event required to be field event.

Registration will begin at 3:00 pm the day of the event and must be done in person at the Laramie Senior High School Track. A copy of a legal birth certificate needs to be presented at registration to verify the participant’s age. There is no cost to register or compete in the Laramie Hershey Track Meet.

Those who place first and second in each event will be invited to participate in the State Hershey Track Meet in Lander, WY on June 16, 2012. The host of the state track meet will provide free overnight accommodations for those competing. Details of where these accommodations are will not be released until after the local event.

The 28th Annual Laramie Arbor Day Celebration Tree Sale will take place on June 2nd. The day is meant to encourage beautification efforts around Laramie and is a great chance to purchase a tree or shrub at cost.

Two trees will be planted during the Arbor Day Celebration. The University Lab School will plant one at Labonte Park and the 4th-6th grade SACC students will plant the other tree at the Laramie Community Recreation Center. Parks & Recreation director Paul Harrison told the city council on Tuesday night that Rocky Mountain Power donated the $500 for the two trees.

Harrison also said there will be 78 trees and shrubs available for purchase at wholesale cost. You can view the full list of available varieties by clicking here. The sale will start at 8 a.m. at the Parks Maintenance Shop at the west end of Labonte Park. But Harrison warned that the line for the sale forms well before 8 a.m. and that all of the trees and shrubs “will disappear before noon.”

All of the trees and shrubs will be available on a first come, first serve basis, with a limit of one per household. For more information contact the Parks Division at 721-5264 or visit the Parks & Recreation pages on the City of Laramie website.

A popular summer concert series is coming back to the University of Wyoming this year. The Campus Activities Center was impressed with the response from students and faculty last year, so they decided to bring back the concert series for another summer.

Every Wednesday from May 23rd until Aug 8th there will be a lunchtime concert from 11:45 am to 1 pm. No concert will take place July 4th so everyone can enjoy the holiday. The concerts will take place at the Simpson Plaza which is located on the west side of the Wyoming Union. If weather does not permit an outdoor concert, the bands will be moved to the lower level of the Wyoming Union, and the concert will take place at the same time.

The summer concert series is open to the public and is free of charge. All members of the community are encouraged to stop by the concerts and even bring a lunchtime picnic to enjoy in Prexy’s Pasture during the show.

The Campus Activities Center is in the process of booking talent for the series, and just over half of the weeks are already filled. You can look forward to performances by Tim Bruns, The Patti Fiasco, Lonesome Heroes, Cary Judd, Rob Drabkin and other talented artists throughout the summer.

The Summer Concert Series will kick off on May 23rd with a performance by Tim Bruns, who performed in last year’s series as well. Tim Bruns is a musician out of Denver who favors genres such as indie, rock and folk.

The Summer Concert Series is a great way to spend lunch hour each Wednesday this summer. Be sure to drop by the University of Wyoming campus to check out the great music.
