Fishing Report – Stopping Invasive Mussels

This week unless you have a white water raft, I suggest you get out to the plains lakes to fish. Lake Hattie, Twin Buttes, Galett (not Meeboer) are fishing well so get your boat dusted off and make sure you have all the stickers and registration updated and placed on your boat.  You will need the following: purchase your Wyoming boat register sticker, your Aquatic Invasive Species decals and make sure your license plate on your trailer is up to date.

Aquatic Invasive Species decals- John Blyth, co-owner of Four Seasons Anglers in Laramie, said he and many in the fishing and boating community consider the decals and fees minor inconveniences, considering the dangers they are trying to prevent. "We have to protect our resources," he said. "This is just one of the steps you have to take."

Last year, Wyoming Game and Fish Department personnel inspected more than 42,000 watercraft in 36 different areas. No live invasive muscles were found, and Bear said the program was considered a success. Wyoming is starting its second year of a boat inspection program intended to prevent the introduction of invasive mussels into waters in the state.

The state performed 42,000 watercraft inspections last year that led to 23 boat decontamination's. No live mussels were found. Non-native mussels have been found in several Western states and can clog waterworks and hurt native species if they're introduced into lakes or rivers.

Wyoming requires all boats launched into the waters of the state to have a decal, which are available at game and fish department offices and elsewhere. The cost of the decals supports the inspection program. The law requires all craft using state waters to display Aquatic Invasive Species decals. Those help fund inspections designed to keep non-native species, such as the zebra and quagga mussels, from entering and wreaking havoc on the state's ecosystem.
