In observance of World Down Syndrome Day, Governor Matt Mead and First Lady Carol Mead will light the Governor's residence in blue on Monday.

"I am honored to join New Jersey First Lady Mary Pat Christie and other First Spouses from around the country in raising awareness about the advances being made to empower people with Down Syndrome," said First Lady Mead. "I am delighted to have the opportunity to take part in the Light the Way campaign."

The Light the Way campaign, which was launched on World Down Syndrome Day in 2011, supports the LuMind Research Down Syndrome Foundation’s efforts to educate, increase awareness and raise funds to increase life opportunities for people living with Down Syndrome.

An estimated three million people worldwide have Down Syndrome, including approximately 400,000 in the U.S.

Life expectancy for people with Down Syndrome has more than doubled in the past 25 years and is now about 60 years, with many individuals living into their seventies.
