A suicidal woman was taken safely into custody after a high-speed chase near Cody early Thursday evening, according to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The chase began when a trooper tried to stop a westbound car speeding 81 mph in a 70 mph zone on U.S. Highway 14/16/20 about 21 miles east of Cody, according to the news release from Patrol Sgt. David Wagener.

The driver did not stop and increased speeds to 111 while driving in the opposite lane of traffic.

The trooper ended the pursuit when the car entered the outskirts of Cody for the safety of the public, the suspect and other pursuing law enforcement.

The suspect drove for about another mile from where the pursuit ended. She tried to hide in a residence in the county. The property owners saw her car and contacted the Park County Sheriff's Office.

Troopers were able to locate and arrest the 28-year-old woman.

During the investigation, authorities determined the female suspect had been suicidal and was consuming prescription medication and alcohol during the pursuit. A shotgun was also located in the trunk of the car.

She is facing charges for driving while under the influence, eluding and speeding. Other charges may be filed later.

She was taken to West Park Hospital in Cody for evaluation and treatment.
