It took less than one calendar year. Ted Holmstrom has officially resigned as the head football coach of the Laramie Plainsmen. He steps aside after a 1-8 season in 2012 and held the position about 11 months. It also means that Laramie High School will begin a search for their 5th head football coach in the last decade.

Holmstrom confirmed the news to KOWB Radio by phone on Monday, but declined comment.

LHS Principal and acting Athletic Director Kim Sorenson has confirmed that a letter of resignation was submitted to the Albany County School Board and has been accepted, as of last Friday.

Sorenson said, "I am not permitted to discuss matters of personnel, but I will tell you that we had a process in place, and the first question will be asked was Ted Holmstrom fired? The answer will be no."

When asked about this being a pressured resignation, Sorenson said, "You would have to ask Ted (Holmstrom) that question."

Holmstrom took over after Bob Knapton resigned following the 2011 season.

Laramie failed to make the playoffs in 2012 for the 8th time in the last 11 seasons.

The Plainsmen struggled on both sides of the ball. They finished seventh in class 4A last season averaging only 224.8 yards per game. They only mustered 12.2 points per game. They also finished ninth in total defense giving up 414 yards and 40.9 points per game. Laramie also had a minus 5 turnover margin in 2012.

Sorenson described the situation of going through another search for a new coach as "heart-breaking." He said, "I can't probably express enough how much I long for Laramie High School football to be where it was and even better. It's an incredible goal for me and my career right now. It's something that I think about often."

Having had kids go through this and knowing so many kids over the years that have gone through the program, Sorenson said, "I want better for them. I want us to be held in prominence. Somebody that nobody's interested in playing cause we're so tough."

Now comes the search process of finding the right person for the job. Sorenson said, "We have some unique gifts and some opportunities here. We need to take advantage of all of them in our searches. Clearly we thought we had in the past, but we're going to have to do better."

KOWB will continue to follow this story and seek reaction from others. The full one-on-one sit-down interview with Sorenson will air on Sportsline Live Thursday at 5 p.m.
