The lyrics to Hunter Hayes‘ new single ‘Wanted’ were poured straight from the singer’s heart onto paper — with a little help from Troy Verges. The emotional power-ballad has quickly become a fan favorite in Hayes’ live show, as well as a standout track on his self-titled debut album.

“When Troy and I normally write, we write in this one room which has got a couple of couches and a couple of acoustic guitars laying around so we can just pick up one and start writing,” Hayes tells Taste of Country. “He had this other room that I actually never been into. It had this gorgeous sounding grand piano. I finally said, ‘Man, can we go in there?’ He said, ‘Yeah, I just never go in there because I figure you want to write on guitar.’ I was like, ‘Man, I’m feeling like writing on the piano today.’”

“So I sat down on the Grand, and there were all these thoughts running through my head,” Hayes continues. “At the time, I was trying to tell somebody something, but I couldn’t figure out how to say it. So I wanted to say it in music because I knew it would be a little more impactful [laughs]. I wanted to say we are great in this relationship together, and I feel like it could even get better.”

You know I’d fall apart without you / I don’t know how you do what you do / ‘Cause everything that don’t make sense about me / Makes sense when I’m with you / Like everything that’s green, girl I need you / But it’s more than one and one makes two / Put aside the math and the logic of it / You gotta know you want it too,” they wrote in the opening lyrics to ‘Wanted.’

“I like to feel like I’m needed by someone,” notes Hayes. “That’s a good feeling, right? To feel like they need you and depend on you in some ways, but not entirely. It’s to feel needed and important, I guess. I was trying to say that … I just want to be with you because I consider you to be my best friend. I consider you to be someone I really respect and someone I really enjoy spending my time with. You’re one of the coolest people I’ve ever known, and I like to just spend time with you, regardless of our relationship status.”

“‘Cause I wanna wrap you up / Wanna kiss your lips / I wanna make you feel wanted / And I wanna call you mine / Wanna hold your hand forever / And never let you forget it / Yeah I wanna make you feel wanted,” they wrote in the song’s chorus.

“Of course, she never knew the song was written about her and it didn’t exactly work, but that’s OK,” laughs Hayes. “I got a great song out of it! It’s totally cool … it’s fine [laughs]!”
