It’s the single biggest day of the basketball season for Laramie High School. Both teams face a must-win situation at the 4A East Regional tournament in Gillette.

The Laramie Lady Plainsmen will play Cheyenne South followed by the Plainsmen taking on Cheyenne Central. Both games will be at Campbell County High School’s north campus. The girl’s game is at 7 p.m. The boy’s game is at 8:30 p.m.

These are single elimination games, meaning a win qualifies you for the state tournament, and your team plays two more games at the regional tournament. If you lose this game your season comes to an end.

The Lady Plainsmen are the third seed and face the sixth Bison. Laramie won both meetings in the regular season, 64-55 in Laramie and 60-34 in Cheyenne.

Laramie girls’ head coach Laura Pollard understands the situation at hand and knows while it’s a good match-up, they must be focused.

The Plainsmen are in the opposite position. They are the sixth seed and will take on the third-seeded Central Indians, who beat them twice in the regular season. Those two games were decided by a total of eight points. In Cheyenne, Central won 56-51, and then the Indians just beat LHS in Laramie five days ago, 62-59.

LHS boys’ head coach Travis Brown feels his squad is prepared; believes it’s a winnable game with the match-up; and is also confident they can handle this scenario.

The pressure packed games will be aired live on KOWB (AM 1290). David Settle and VerDon Hoopes will call the action beginning at 6:15 tonight.

The other first round, loser out games in Gillette feature Central against Sheridan in the girl’s bracket at 4 p.m. That is followed by Cheyenne East taking on Cheyenne South in the boy’s bracket at 5:30 p.m.
