They walked to bring awareness to what some call a public health issue in Laramie County and Wyoming, domestic violence.

Kids,cops, firefighters, residents and state and local officials donned high heels Thursday afternoon for the 5th annual "Walk in her Shoes" event, to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence.

Debbie Richardson, whose daughter, Cheyenne resident Crystal Town was shot and killed by her husban on October 2nd, 2013, was the guest speaker at the event.

Richardson said it is time to put an end to the "crime" of domestic violence.

If they are around this our kids are going to grow up thinking this behavior is acceptable. And they are going to be an abuser or be in an abusive relationship themselves.

Thomas Shingle, Operations Chief with Cheyenne Fire and Rescue, says as first responders, firefighters often see the effects of domestic violence first hand.

According to statistics from Safehouse in Cheyenne, 1 in every 4 women in Laramie County report they are or have been the victim of domestic violence.
