First Graders from Beitel Elementary School got a first hand look into city government during the regular meeting of the Laramie City Council on Tuesday night. Six students made a presentation in support of a resolution to install a “Welcome to Laramie” sign on Hwy 130 near Kiwanis Park.

The students said their first grade class has been working all year to make a difference in the community and that the welcome sign could show visitors and remind residents that education is a high priority in Laramie. It will be outlined with student hand prints and mention the various educational institutions which make Laramie their home.

The first graders hosted a free family fun night to raise money for the sign. The event on May 11 involved twenty Minute to Win It games and raffles for prizes that were donated by local businesses. Almost $700 was raised.

After hearing the presentation the council approved the resolution unanimously. Mayor Scott Mullner also accepted their invitation to cut the ribbon on the sign at a ceremony set for Thursday, May 24.
