Local heroes were recognized at the Laramie Fire Department’s 2015 Awards Program in City Hall on Friday.

Firefighter of the year went to Equipment Operator Joseph Mathews, who recently completed his HAZMAT technician courses and is now the co-leader of the regional emergency response team that covers both Albany and Carbon counties.

Mathews says he turned down a position with a larger metropolitan department in favor of working in Laramie.

Equipment Operator Luke Hawkins was recognized as EMT of the year.  Life Saving Medals were given to Company Officer Kern, Equipment Operator McIntyre, Equipment Officer Belaski, Firefighter Nyquist, Company Officer Cowger, Firefighter Brock, Firefighter Farber, and Equipment Operator Giustino.

Firefighter Brock received the Distinguished Service Award.  Equipment Operator Cass and Equipment Operator Mathews were recognized for being Honor Guard members.

Baby Delivery Awards were earned by Equipment Operators Hawkins and Pisciotti.

The Laramie Fire Department in addition to responding to all emergencies within the Laramie city limits, LFD fields calls within Rural Fire District No. 1, which covers most of Albany County.  The Department’s ambulances and EMS staff respond to calls across all 4,200 square miles of Albany County.
