The 10th annual Dooley Oil Classic wood bat baseball tournament hosted by the Laramie Rangers takes center stage at Cowboy Field this weekend.

Laramie welcomes the Cheyenne Hawks, Douglas Cats, Green River Knights, Rock Springs Archie Hay Post 24 and Spearfish, SD for their only home tournament of the season. Each team will play three games in a round robin format before match play on Sunday. The championships is slated for 1:30 Sunday afternoon.

The Rangers have won 10 straight games coming in and are looking to stay hot.

Manager Brandon Ruckman said they can’t wait for this tournament.

“They excited. They’re ready to go. We start it with Douglas, and there’s been some history there, and so I know they’re looking forward to coming out and having a good game.”

Laramie (19-11) will take on the Cats at 6 p.m. Thursday. That’s followed by a game against Rock Springs at 7 p.m. Friday, and they’ll face Green River Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Ruckman admitted that with this being a wood bat tournament, there are some slight adjustments.

“You’re not going to see deep balls very often. I mean, you can still hit ‘em, but not as frequently. We’re going to have to take advantage of good base running. If we see the ball shallow, if it drops, reading the ball a little bit better on the base paths. Outfield’s going to change, obviously, playing a little bit further in.”

He went on to say they’ll change some things, but it comes down to playing fundamental baseball.
