Laramie's first-ever Summer Moose Day allows hikers and moose enthusiasts to collect data on moose sightings in the area. Moose Day helps the Wyoming Game and Fish Department conserve and manage moose populations.

Summer Moose Day will be held on July 18 in the Snowy Mountains and Pole Mountain outside of Laramie, Wyoming. Pre-registration is required by July 13. Registration includes a one-hour training session Wednesday, July 15 or Thursday, July 16 at 7pm in the UW Berry Center (10th and Lewis St., Laramie, WY). There are many routes to choose from and there are even some driving routes available for those who wish not to hike!

For those interested in participating in Summer Moose Day, visit http://wyomingbiodiversity.org/programs/moose-day/summer-moose-day-2015/.

Participants are asked to get to their route as early on July 18 as dawn, and complete their survey by noon on July 18. It is recommended that groups of two or more sign up for a route unless you are a very skilled back-country explorer. Please note dogs are not allowed on surveys.

Moose surveys are done to increase the knowledge of moose distribution, density, summer habitat quality, winter ranges, and reproduction rates. These data will be given to biologists at the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and at the University of Wyoming.

All sightings will be available for the community to view at the Wyoming Biodiversity Citizen Science Initiative website (wyobio.org).

The event and program are coordinated by the UW Biodiversity Institute, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Wyoming Cooperative Game and Fish Research Unit, and the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database.  Summer Moose Day is an extension of the original program, Moose Day, held by Nature Mapping Jackson Hole in Jackson each winter.
