Four turnovers, a blocked punt and field position all contributed in a season-opening loss for the Laramie Plainsmen at Sheridan, 42-13, last Friday night.

Laramie head coach Chuck Syverson said the biggest thing is we have to take care of the ball.

“You can’t turn the ball over against anybody. I told them after the game, you turn the ball over against the worst team in the league, and you’re going to get beat by ‘em.”

The No. 2 ranked Broncs built a 21-0 lead by halftime. Kyle Custis ran for two touchdowns and Drew Boedecker threw for another. Boedecker added two more TD tosses, and Parker Christensen ran for one, as Sheridan extended to a 42-0 lead. The Broncs scored on their first three possessions of the second half.

Laramie (0-1) finally scored in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach. Taylor Dodd ran 11 yards for one touchdown, and he connected with McCade Johnson from 15 yards out on another. The Plainsmen had one P-A-T blocked.

The blocked punt led to the Broncs first TD. The interception in the second quarter led to another, while one of three fumbles also led to a score.

Dodd ran 22 times for 79 yards. He went 18-of-25 for 185 yards through the air, but was also sacked three times. Conor Beeston had nine receptions for 117 yards. Zane Garner led the defense with 13 points.

Syverson added he was pretty optimistic about their line coming into this game.

“We really got it handed to us up-front, so we’re going to have some things we’re going to have to fix there and move some personnel around to try to do a better job, because we can’t have the type of weapons on this team and not have the time to either get them the ball in space or run the ball effectively.”

Sheridan out-gained Laramie 352-to-269 in total offense. The Broncs ran for 223 yards and the three TD’s in their 12th straight victory over the Plainsmen on the gridiron.

Another factor was field position. Sheridan's average drive start was at the Laramie 46. Six of their 12 drives started in Plainsmen territory. Laramie's average drive start was its own 29-yard line.

Next up for the Plainsmen will be their first game at the new Deti Stadium. Laramie hosts the Rock Springs Tigers Friday night at 7 p.m.
