Laramie summers can be hit or miss when it comes to those pesky mosquitoes. In recent years West Nile Virus has caused some health concerns across the state. Mosquitoes are known to carry the virus which can cause health concerns and even death. Moisture levels this year in Laramie were very high and even caused flooding along the Laramie River. High moisture levels also meant a higher number of mosquitoes. With summer continuing on, those mosquito numbers have dropped and are now below the surveillance thresholds for fogging control in residential areas.

As of now fogging in Laramie has been suspended but could resume if there is a rebound in mosquito numbers or if West Nile Virus activity is documented. Although fogging will be stopped in residential areas it will continue along the Laramie River Greenbelt Trail but only on a reduced basis.

This year there have been no reports or cases of West Nile Virusin Albany County and the risk rating of infection is at level 1. Mosquito control application schedules are available on the Mosquito Control and Integrated Pest Management Hotline at 721-5056. A list is also provided for any chemical applications that are made by the City of Laramie Parks Division. For questions or concerns please call Keith Wardlaw, Mosquito Control Supervisor at 721-5258.
