It finally feels like summer and nothing compliments sultry summer weather like a generous scoop of ice cream.

Today is National Ice Cream Day and in observance of this cool holiday, we would like to share a few fun facts and trivia.

  • The third Sunday in July was officially declared National Ice Cream Day by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.
  • Vanilla is the most popular flavor of ice cream in the U.S. followed by chocolate, butter pecan, strawberry and mint chocolate chip
  • Japan probably has the corner on strange ice cream flavors including: Taco Aisu (octopus meat), Basashi Aisu (raw horse meat), Ikasumi (squid ink) and a few varieties of saltwater fish flavored ice cream. (I think I’ll stick to vanilla or amaretto)
  • More ice cream is sold on Sunday than any other day of the week.
  • America’s favorite topping for ice cream is chocolate syrup, closely followed by whipped cream.
  • The “brain freeze,” a sensation that usually lasts no more than 30 seconds, is the direct result of the rapid cooling and rewarming of the capillaries in the sinuses and can be prevented by eating your ice cream a bit slower.
  • Ice cream was added to the short list of necessary items needed to boost troop morale in WWII.
  • 3 percent of Americans admit to eating ice cream in the bath tub and 5 percent share with their pets.
  • It takes an average of 50 licks to finish a single scoop ice cream.
