Wyoming travelers, especially pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, are urged to pay attention to Zika-related travel warnings now that the virus has reached Miami, Florida.

"We wouldn't be surprised to see it spread further in the United States, but that doesn't mean it's going to spread to Wyoming," said Wyoming Department of Health spokeswoman Kim Deti.

"It's just not going to take hold here," added Deti. "The kind of mosquitoes that spread Zika don't like Wyoming's weather, they're not going to make Wyoming their home."

Deti says people planning to travel should check to see if their destination is affected by Zika virus and if it is they may want to consider postponing their plans.

"The biggest threat involves a serious birth defect known as microcephaly and it's something that we just don't want Wyoming babies to have," said Deti. "The CDC is updating the travel warnings really quite frequently, so we suggest people check the CDC website before they travel to a potentially affected area."

Fortunately, there haven't been any confirmed cases of Zika in Wyoming yet, but Deti says she "won't be surprised to see it happen."

"People do travel," said Deti. "We're urging folks to pay attention to the warnings that may personally affect them and their health and perhaps the health of a baby."
