The Laramie Ranger District fire crews will soon be conducting prescribed burns in the northern portion of the Pole Mountain unit.

Burns will take place over the next few weeks or months, pending favorable fuel and weather conditions, according to a press release.

The burn areas will vary in size, from a few acres to 100 acres at a time. The burns are part of the ongoing Pole Mountain Vegetation Project on the Medicine Bow National Forest in eastern Albany County.

Forest Service Spokesman Aaron Voos said additional burning will occur this Tuesday and Wednesday on Pole Mountain. Smoke is expected to be visible from Happy Jack Highway. Voos said about 120 acres has been burned so far this year on Pole Mountain.

The Forest Service says recreation on Pole Mountain may be temporarily affected depending where the recreation is located. Crews will be making personal contact with recreationists and signs will also be placed on adjacent roads so the public is aware of the burns.

The Pole Mountain Vegetation Project is an ongoing effort that began in 2014 and is scheduled to take place over 7 to 10 years. Almost 9,000 acres have been authorized to be treated through a variety of methods in order to return to a resilient, diverse and healthy forest.

Updates on the burn dates, times and locations can be found on the Medicine Bow National Forest official twitter account, @FS_MBRTB, or the Laramie Ranger District website.
