A Laramie native who served as a member of the Laramie Police Department for over three decades passed away Sunday night after a six-year battle with colon cancer.

Jeffrey Bury, 57, retired in the final two weeks of his life, just one month shy of completing his 35th year of service.

Public services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 29, at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center. A reception will follow at 4 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Fieldhouse.

His family wrote the following obituary:

Jeffrey Todd Bury, 57, of Laramie, died July 24, 2016, due to colon cancer.

Jeff was born March 17, 1959, in Laramie to Joseph C. Bury and Shirley M. Kellogg.

He graduated from Laramie High School in 1977, then worked odd jobs while keeping his eye on the prize at the Laramie Police Department — the only job he ever wanted. He was sworn in as a police officer in 1981, where he first served as a patrol officer for 15 years. He was later selected for promotion to sergeant, detective sergeant, acting commander, operations commander and his most recent position as assistant chief of police. Jeff graduated from the elite FBI National Academy in 2003, Session 212, and was also a member and commander of the Special Response Team for 30 years. At just one month shy of 35 years as a respected lawman, Jeff regretfully retired in the final two weeks of his life.

Jeff loved working with his hands and thoroughly enjoyed building his cabin. Despite his early ending, Jeff obtained the things he always wanted in life: the job he loved and a loving wife and beautiful children who made his happy home complete.

He is survived by his wife Susan; and children, Jacob Bury, Delta Burchi, Morgan Bury, Carter Burchi and Christopher Bury. He is also survived by his sister Janine Rauch, of Casper, and her children, Seth, Adam, Rachael and Emma. He loved them all and is dearly missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an organization that was dear to his heart, the Laramie Police Department Foundation, at www.lpdfoundation.org.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 29 at the Marion H. Rochelle Gateway Center, 222 South 22nd St., followed by a reception at 4 p.m. at the University of Wyoming Fieldhouse.
