The Albany County Sheriff’s Office is urging people to be cautious after some Albany County residents were recently exposed to scam phone calls.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Albany County residents have been receiving phone calls from a person claiming to be a “Lt. Williams,” saying they work for the Albany County Sheriff’s Office. The person reportedly tells residents that they missed jury duty and have to pay substantial fines for failing to appear for jury duty, as well as trying to scam residents by claiming they owe back-taxes.

Recipients of the phone call are instructed to purchase money cards and meet the caller at the Albany County Courthouse with the cards.

Undersheriff Josh DeBree said there have been at least three calls that he knows of, with a resident being defrauded and losing money in one of the cases.

The Sheriff’s Office says it has attempted to contact the caller, who uses a number out of Pinedale. The Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to not give out any personal information over the phone and to contact law enforcement if they receive any calls of this kind.
