The University of Wyoming campus is full of excited and new faces today as students begin moving into the residence halls.

The doors opened at 6:30 a.m., marking the beginning of student move-in day at UW. By about 10 a.m. today, over 900 students had already checked in and moved into the dorms.

Eric Webb, Executive Director for Residence Life and Dining, says about 1,900 students are expected to move into the dorms from today through the weekend. Webb says between 82% and 85% of those who will move into the residence halls do so on the first day of the move-in period.

According to Webb, about 200 volunteers help to make the mass move in work. Students, faculty, members of the community, those involved in Greek life and people from other organizations on campus donned brown volunteer t-shirts. They helped people to unload vehicles, put items in carts, transport items to dorm rooms and learn how to get around the residence halls.

University of Wyoming President Dick McGinity joined in on the excitement by helping students throughout the day. McGinity introduced himself to students, spoke with families, and helped to load items into the dorms. He even surprised some lucky dorm residents by visiting them in their newly occupied dormitories.

“One of our jobs is to make them feel at home, and that’s really why I’m here. I want them to feel at home because if they feel at home they will do better in school,” says McGinity.

Students will continue to move into the residence halls throughout the weekend. The first day of classes at the University of Wyoming is on August 31.
