Two state champions, three school records and a pair of team trophies highlighted Laramie’s results at the 2016 State Indoor Track Championships last weekend in Gillette.

Junior McCade Johnson won the 55 meter hurdles in a school record time of 7.77 last Saturday. It’s his first career title.

Laramie head coach Greg Schabron attributed Johnson’s victory to his steadiness.

“He’s been so consistent all year long… McCade was able to be a state champion and very proud of all his accomplishments.”

Another first place came from Lexi Hernandez. She’s from Wheatland, but competes for LHS during the indoor track season. Hernandez won the girls long jump with leap of 17 feet 6 inches. It was also a school record.

The third school record came from Nate Albers in the pole vault. He broke his own record with a vault of 14 feet, but finished second. Albers also was third in the high jump.

Other notable performances came from senior Chris Henry. He was second in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and added a fifth place in the 800 meters. The Plainsmen also were second in the 4X200 and 4X400 meter relays with a third in the 4X800 meter relay.

The Laramie Plainsmen finished as runner-up with 89 points. They were 20 back of team champ Cheyenne Central and only one in front of Gillette.

Schabron added they knew Friday night it would be tough to catch the Indians.

“We thought the guys did a great job in the ending events. Nate with the vault; securing eight points there; guys coming across with eight points and second place in the 4X4 (relay); just to cap it and steal away that one point over Gillette is always nice to see.”

For the ladies, Kayla Sherrodd was top five in both the 400 and 800 meters, while Maria Smith-Lopez finished in the top six of the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. The Laramie girl’s also came in second in the 4X400 relay.

The Lady Plainsmen were third in the team standings with 52 points. Gillette ran away with first place with 148 points, while Natrona was second at 117.

Schabron said it came down to the last two events.

“There was a two point swing between third place and sixth place. The girls were able to move up, and it was nice to see them come away with that trophy.”
