Two Campgrounds Open For Firewood

Two campgrounds in the Laramie area have been temporarily opened to firewood gathering. The upper loops of Rob Roy Campground and Pole Creek Campground are open to those who have a personal-use permit to gather firewood. Both areas remain closed to camping.

Both campgrounds are on the Laramie Ranger District of the Medicine Bow National Forest and have available firewood after hazard tree removal projects.

The wood in these areas is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Both require a personal use firewood permit which is ten dollars per chord. A minimum a twenty dollars is required.

Permits can be obtained at the Laramie Ranger Office located at 2468 Jackson Street in Laramie. It is open for permits from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Pole Creek Campground is the only location on the Pole Mountain Unit that is currently allowing firewood collection.

The U.S. Forest Service asks that those who utilize these areas do not cut standing trees in the campground, park safely while not obstructing traffic, are aware of safety of themselves and others, do not use large, commercial type equipment and follow all conditions listed on the personal-use firewood permit.

U.S. Forest Service Public Affairs Specialist Aaron Voos notes that most of the wood is ready to load into vehicles, but people may need to bring saws, chain saws and other tools to remove limbs or cut wood into a more manageable sizes.
