The study compared over 250 cities with a population of over 10,000 based on the average low temperature in the coldest month of the year from 1981 to 2010.

Sheridan ranked 21st nationwide, with an average low temperature of 10.6 degrees and an average wind speed of just over 7 miles per hour during the month of January.

Fairbanks, Alaska, finished first in the study, followed by Grand Forks, Williston, and Fargo, North Dakota. Duluth, Minnesota rounded out the top five.

While Sheridan and Casper rank among the coldest cities in America with a population over 10,000, the tiny town of Bondurant, population 93, is the coldest place in the Cowboy State, with an average low of -3.1 in January.
