A new scholarship from a University of Wyoming group is designed to help those who have served our country.

The Connor Montgomery Cloud Memorial Scholarship for Veterans is open for applications until Friday, Nov. 11. One-semester scholarships will be offered for the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters, per a UW news release.

The scholarships are available exclusively to veterans. They can be new or continuing students in any US degree-granting program at any location where a UW degree program is offered.

Scholarships are available to undergraduate and graduate students, whether they be full- or part-tie students. First-year UW students who are veterans will be given priority.

Academic potential and success, class standing, financial need, extenuating circumstances and information included in the application will all factor into how the scholarships are awarded.

Applicants must provide documentation of veteran status along with the scholarship application by emailing the Students Supporting Veterans committee at ssv4uw@gmail.com. The application is available online at uwyo.edu/vetservices.

Applicants must also have filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at fafsa.ed.gov.

The scholarship was founded by Charles and Cynthia Cloud, a Wyoming state auditor, in memory of their son, Connor Montgomery Cloud. Luke Cloud, Connor’s brother and a former committee member at UW, helped create the scholarship and the COMBAT Color Fun Run in Laramie, which funds the scholarship.

The Cloud family consists of four generations of Marines, including Charles and Luke, who graduated from UW College of Engineering and Applied Science. Other family members have served in the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Students Supporting Veterans supports and provides resources for the support of veterans and patriotic students as well as their families. The group encourages people to get active and get involved, and to take leadership positions in campus activities at UW.

The group hosts social and philanthropic events open to students and community members who support the nation’s military.
