The city of Sochi, which hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, is located on what large sea?

Do you know the answer? Annika Coberly proved that she is a geography master by correctly answering this question and winning the state Geography Bee that took place at the University of Wyoming last Friday. The answer, by the way, is the Black Sea.

Coberly, an eighth-grade student at Upton Middle School, defeated 36 students from around the state and will represent Wyoming at the 27th annual National Geographic Bee at National Geographic Society headquarters May 11-13 in Washington, D.C. The national winner receives a $50,000 scholarship.

Joshua Hansen, a sixth-grade student at Jackson Middle School, placed second, and Keyan Mefford-Owens, a fifth-grader at Cheyenne’s Pioneer Park Elementary School, placed third. To qualify for state competition, school winners took a qualifying written test that was scored by the National Geographic Society

Other students in the top 10 were:

Afton -- Robert Choma, Star Valley Middle School.

Evanston -- Juan Cerda, North Evanston Elementary; Hannah Lindford, Evanston Middle School.

Green River -- Levi Hren, Lincoln Middle School.

Lander -- Conrad Keevert, Lander Valley Middle School.

Laramie -- George Yost, Laramie Junior High School.

Rock Springs -- Michael Newman, Rock Springs Jr. High School.
