Applications for UW Idol, a student singing competition, are being accepted beginning Monday, March 23, in the University of Wyoming Campus Activities Center, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union.

The first 100 students with valid UW IDs will be guaranteed audition spots. The open casting call tryouts are Friday, April 10, at 9 p.m. in the UW College of Education auditorium. Check-in for the event begins at 8 p.m., and doors will open to the public at 8:30 p.m.

Students auditioning each will be given a 30-second time slot to sing a song of the student’s choice a cappella style. A panel of judges will tally scores of all participants during a short break. The top 15 -- as well as five alternates -- will be chosen to move on to the semifinals Friday, April 17. The finals are scheduled Friday, April 24. Both the semifinals and the final competition will be in the UW College of Education auditorium at 9 p.m.

The UW Idol winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize; second place gets $500; and third place is worth $300. An “audience choice” winner will receive $100. The William Hung Award also will be awarded for the “most creative” audition.

Starring David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Carmen Ejogo and Tim Roth, “Selma” chronicles Martin Luther King Jr.’s campaign to secure equal voting rights through an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., in 1965.
