Volunteers Needed for Forest Service Work Day

A community organization in southeast Wyoming is looking for volunteers to assist with work days on the Pole Mountain Unit of the Medicine Bow National Forest on May 5.

The Common Outdoor Ground had originally scheduled Saturday, April 21 as a volunteer work day, but that day was canceled due to a forecasted storm and wet weather, according to Aaron Voos, U.S. Forest Service spokesman.  The Laramie Ranger District will attempt to reschedule that day.

About 15 volunteers are needed for May 5 to assist the U.S. Forest Service in designating dispersed camping locations along Forest Road 700, or Vedauwoo Road. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each work day and volunteers will be marking and fencing designated sites, installing fire rings at those sites and rehabilitating old sites.

Food and drinks will be provided on the volunteer days. COG will provide volunteers with additional information such as where to meet and how to dress, prior to the event.

COG recently signed a 2018 group volunteer agreement with the Laramie Ranger District to help coordinate volunteers and resources for this and other events over the next few months. Other projects planned with the Forest Service include trails work on Pole Mountain and the Platte River Wilderness and litter clean-up on Pole Mountain.

The group has also approached Albany County about the possibility of future volunteer work on the Pilot Hill acreage once the land purchase is finalized.
