WDE Announces Food Program Sites

The Wyoming Department of Education announced the participating Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) organizations in Wyoming today. The CACFP provides reimbursement for nutritious meals and snacks served to eligible children in child care centers, family day care homes, as well as to eligible adults in care centers. The organization also teaches good eating habits and makes sure well-balanced and nutritious meals are served to children in these participating centers.

Wyoming Department of Education Communications Director Kari Eakins said that the need for this kind of program is acute.

“Currently, 37 percent of students in Wyoming are enrolled in free or reduced price lunches. The CACFP program helps supplement meals that students would normally get in school, as well as children who are too young to be in school and of course adults who are no longer attending” Eakins said.

Eakins said that the CAFP is especially important during the economic downturn in Wyoming.

“It’s a good local resource for people to reach out to.”

The participating locations in Albany county include the U.W. Early Care & Education Center, the Developmental Preschool and Day Care, Laramie Child Development, Laramie Head Start, Kiddie Cottage Daycare, Basic Beginnings North and Basic Beginnings South, or Aaron’s Place.

Eakins said Laramie residents can get involved by contacting the participating centers.
