Hunting season opened Saturday in Wyoming for most small game animals. That means seasons are open for animals like cottontail rabbits, fox squirrels, and multiple types of grouse, snipe, doves and rail.

Wyoming Game and Fish is advocating safety this hunting season. Spokesperson Al Langston says it’s always wise for hunters to wear a florescent-colored vest, especially in areas with a dense hunter population, even while hunting small game.

“It’s a good idea for upland bird hunting anyway to wear blaze orange,” Langston said. “And then the standard safety tips – you know, know where your companions are and just handle the gun safely.”

Langston also says hunters under the age of 14 can hunt most small game free of charge as long as they possess proper safety qualifications. In particular, young hunters must pass a hunter’s safety course.

“Permits are required regardless of age for turkey, but the main thing (young people) need to have, though, is their hunter’s safety card – they need to carry that with them in the field,” Langston said. “But, as far as license, if you’re under 14, it’s not required.”

Langston says most big game seasons will open in October. For more information regarding hunting regulations, start dates and end dates for this hunting season, visit Wyoming Game and Fish’s website.
