YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Yellowstone National Park saw a drop in visitor numbers in July but an increase in vehicle traffic.

The park counted 812,212 recreational visitors in July, bringing the total number of people visiting the park so far this year to more than 1.8 million.

July's number of recreational visitors was down 5.25 percent but vehicle traffic was up 4.32 percent compared to July 2012.

The park is using a new method this year to estimate its number of visitors. The new method counts fewer people per vehicle than in the past, which explains why the park can have more traffic but fewer visitors.

July is typically the park's peak visitation month, followed in order by August, June, September, and May.
