Carrie Underwood (Politely) Claps Back at Critic of ‘Sunday Night Football’ Song ‘Game On’
If there is one thing Carrie Underwood fans can count on, it's that the superstar will remain classy, despite whatever circumstances are thrown her way. And, she did just this on Monday (Dec. 17) when facing social media criticism over her NFL Sunday Night Football song, "Game On."
When a Twitter user (who self-identifies as a "producer/showrunner" at Sports Illustrated made a snarky comment about how much "we hate" the song "Game On," using Sunday Night Football commentator Cris Collinsworth as a jumping-off point, Underwood responded gracefully but pointedly.
It's hard to argue with Underwood's tweet, which not only defended her work, but also made a direct statement about how women should support each other rather than tear each other down.
The original disser ended up backing down, posting an apology noting that she didn't mean to upset Underwood or her fans, and that she is indeed "all about supporting women" too. It sounds as if she was simply missing predecessor Faith Hill, who sang the Joan Jett-inspired rocker prior to Underwood's taking on the post.
Underwood has much to be proud of regarding the song, regardless of differing personal opinions regarding it. The tune was crafted with the intention of changing things up a bit, and Underwood certainly brings her all to the table. "We just felt like it was time to maybe switch it up," she notes. "[The song] was written specifically for Sunday Night Football, and I think it's such a great hype song."
Sunday Night Football is prime-time television's No. 1 show for seven years running. This year marks the sixth season that Underwood will be singing the SNF theme.
