Cheyenne City Council Raises Residential Speed Limit

The speed limit on Cheyenne's residential streets is going up.

The Cheyenne City Council voted 9 to 1 Monday night to increase the blanket speed limit of 25 mph back to 30 mph.

"The original enactment of the 25 mph speed limit, which occurred in 2004, was not done in compliance with state statute," said City Engineer John Hall.

"We're moving forward with the MPO to do a city-wide speed study just to make sure that all the speed limits that we have established throughout the community are in compliance," he added.

Hall anticipates the speed study to be completed within the next six months.

"They're soliciting quotes right now for the data collection," said Hall. "We'll do the data analysis ourselves to keep those costs low and we'll see if there are any recommended changes."

Hall says it will probably take a few weeks to get the 25 mph signs down and the new 30 mph signs up.

"We'll begin removing the signs as early as tomorrow," said Hall. "We anticipate that the cost will be less than $1,000."
