Cowgirls Host UniWyo Invite to Close Non-Conference Slate

LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team puts its program-best start of 9-0 on the line this week with its second home tournament of 2023, the UniWyo Invitational. The Cowgirls welcome Tennessee Tech to Laramie for a 6:30 p.m., contest Thursday before closing Saturday at 1 p.m., against Idaho State.

UW got to 9-0 to begin the 2023 campaign behind the strength of another 3-0-week last week at the Portland Invitational. Wyoming defeated the host-Pilots in five sets Thursday night before making short work of Eastern Washington with a sweep Friday afternoon.

The Cowgirls closed with a four-set win over CSUN Saturday. The nine consecutive wins to open a season broke the previous record of seven-straight back in 2014.

The Cowgirls are led by their dynamic offense, which leads the Mountain West with a .291 team hitting percentage, a league-leading 14.27 kills per set and 13.50 assists per. UW has the top two hitters in efficiency in the league so far this season in Tierney Barlow and Sarah Holcomb who are hitting .453 and .450, respectively.

Barlow is averaging 3.13 kills per set while Holcomb is at 2.40 per. The duo also leads Wyoming defensively at the net with 1.03 blocks per set. Rylee Schulz enters play this week with a team-best 3.33 kills per set, a mark that ranks eighth-best in the Mountain West.

At setter, Kasia Partyka continues to pace the Cowgirl offense and the conference with her 11.47 assists per set. Partyka has also tallied four double-doubles this season as she is second on the team averaging 2.40 digs per set.

Skylar Erickson leads the Brown & Gold averaging 3.63 digs per set. Erickson also has a team-best 11 service aces thus far.

Tennessee Tech enters this week's action with a 4-5 mark overall and is coming off a four-set victory over a Cowgirl common opponent in South Dakota State.

The Golden Eagles are led by Madolyn Isringhausen's 97 kills (3.23 per set). As a team, TTU averages 11.61 kills a set and is holding opponents to 10.97 per. Tennessee Tech is hitting .158 as a team. At setter, Jordan Karlen's 9.19 assists per set are a team-best while defensively, McKenna Young leads the team averaging just under 3.8 digs per set.

The Golden Eagles were co-season favorites in the Preseason Ohio Vally Conference Poll. TTU is in search of its first true-road win of the season after opening the campaign 0-2.

Idaho State is 1-7 coming into the tournament under the tutelage of first-year head coach, Sean Carter. The Bengals are led by Sadie Bluth and Jamie Streit who are both averaging 2.67 kills per set.

Defensively, ISU is led by Marci Richins and Meline Robarge's 0.70 blocks per in 2023. In the back row, Lily Liekweg's 3.30 digs per set are a team-high while Aliyah Sopoaga is second on the team averaing 2.54 digs and has tallied a team-best 173 (6.65 per) assists on the year.
