Cowgirls Travel to San Diego State for Pivotal Road Test
LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowgirls hit the road after a midweek bye as they travel to California to face San Diego State at 2 p.m., Mountain Time Saturday. The Aztecs have won three straight while UW has won 3-of-4 as of late.
Saturday’s game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and can be heard across the Cowgirl Radio Network with David Settle on the call.
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming (13-9, 7-3 MW) last played February 1, as it put together an impressive showing against Boise State, defeating the Broncos 79-45. The 34-point margin of victory is the largest in series history against Boise State. Allyson Fertig and Emily Mellema both went for 22 points in the victory.
It marked the third time this season that a pair of Cowgirls have scored 20-plus in the same game. This is the first time since 2014-15 that UW has had three games with two 20-point scorers.
Entering the week, Fertig is one of three Division I players this season that are averaging at least 20 points per game and shooting at least 60-percent from the floor during conference play (UCLA’s Lauren Betts and TCU’s Sedona Prince).
Fertig ranks first or second in the Mountain West in 10 different statistical categories in 2024-25. Her Mountain West record for consecutive games making 50-percent-or-better of her shots from the field now sits at 18-straight games. In league games this season, Fertig so far leads the conference in scoring (20.3 PPG), rebounding (10.1 RPG), blocks (2.4 BPG) and field goal percentage (60.1-percent).
Malene Pedersen has entered the top 10 in the Mountain West in conference scoring, sitting in ninth. Pedersen is averaging 14.6 points per game in league action while her 55-percent shooting is second in the conference behind Fertig.
Pedersen also ranks fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio at a clip of 3.1. Ola Ustowska is tied for the league lead with a 3.6 assist-to-turnover ratio while her four assists per contest ranks fourth in the league. Emily Mellema is sixth in the conference in assists (3.8) and is the league-leader averaging 2.6 steals per game.
As a team, Wyoming is fourth in the league in scoring (69.7) and is second in scoring defense (60.9). The Cowgirls are No. 1 in the conference in team field goal percentage at 50.5-percent while their 3-point percentage of 37.3-percent during conference play ranks second-best in the Mountain West.
UW is also first in the conference in assists per game by a wide margin, averaging 17.7 per contest. CSU is second in the league averaging 14.2 assists per game.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE
San Diego State’s balanced offensive attack is led by Adryana Quezada’s 11 points per game. Quezada also leads the team shooting 52.4-percent from the floor and is second on the team averaging 5.7 rebounds per game. Veronica Sheffey and Naomi Panganiban also average in double figures, scoring 10.7 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.
Cali Clark leads the Aztecs in rebounding (8.5), blocks (34) and steals (35) this season. Sheffey is averaging a team-leading three assists per game in 2024-25. SDSU’s reserves lead the league in bench scoring this season averaging 29.6 points per contest.
As a team, the Aztecs average 69.3 points per game while allowing opponents to score just 60.2 a contest. SDSU shoots it at a clip of 43-percent on the year and 34.3-percent from 3-point range. Opponents are shooting just under 39-percent overall and 29-percent from beyond-the-arc.
The Aztecs also have a plus-margin on the boards and average nearly 2.5 more assists per game while committing four fewer turnovers.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST SAN DIEGO STATE
Wyoming leads the all-time series with the Aztecs, 38-31, including winning this season’s first meeting, 78-71 in Laramie back on January 11. The Cowgirls are 10-17 in series history in San Diego. The Aztecs won last season’s meeting in Viejas, 58-55 in the regular season finale.
